Our History

My Dad’s Pizzaria is once again under family ownership – the family that begin it all: The family of Garner Gayheart.

In August of 1989 My Dad’s Pizza opened for the very first time.  It was family operated until 2006 when the business was sold. After a couple of owners and a period of downtime the Mark Pratt family including Vickie Pratt, Mark’s wife, and family members Tara Carte-Short, Kella Simpson, and Miranda Devaney. In all there is a total of seven operating the business.

Mark said the reason the pizza establishment was opened in the first place was because there was a desire by Gayheart for a pizza meeting the demand of the family’s taste buds.

Originally operating as Long’s Pizza the business moved to its Bellefonte Road location in 1991. From Long’s the name changed to My Dad’s Pizzaria as chosen by family members. “We weren’t allowed to bring the name to the new location so after some bantering it was decided to call it My Dad’s Pizzaria,” Mark Pratt said.

And then in 2011 the family reclaimed the brand and the business after a period of inactivity.

The menu is about the same as the original for the pizza establishment. The owners found the original recipes are what they wanted most and all of them are available for carry-out, din- in or delivery. The business has two ovens up and going and a grill for sandwiches. The kitchen stays very busy during the hours of operation.

“Things are pretty much the way we left it in 2006,” Mark said.

The business is open 3-11 p.m. Mon- Thurs, and 3-12 on Fri-Sat. The business is closed on Sunday. The family has given thought to opening earlier – but for now the established hours will prevail.

Mark Pratt says there are a few things he would like to add to the store’s menu but those will be developed and come on slowly.

For now the plan is to go with what is established and look down the road at the possibility of opening a second store when the economy improves. “Within the next year or so we’d like to open another store, he said. There are several considerations some including several locations in the Tri-State.

He added he is satisfied with the progress of the reopening, “and we’re getting a lot of our old customers back and that’s what is important to us.”

In retrospect Pratt says he is pleased with the return to business and has been pleased with the return to business under the old name. “In this economy, I wouldn’t even attempt to start a new business without name recognition – it has meant a great deal to us.”

Over time Pratt would like to see delivery increase to the levels of the mid-2000. He says while percentages of delivery have changed business has picked up and it keeps growing.

Plans are underway to build a new website – and with some new products such as Shrooms and some high demand items, the future appears bright for the My Dad’s family.
